[I had misplaced my grandmother's recipe for pecan pie until rummaging through my late mother's storage unit, where I discovered it again written in my father's handwriting. I can only surmise that he must have been writing it down for my mother, as it was not like him to be devoted to recipes. My grandmother switched to making this pie with whole wheat flour later. It's not as rich as other recipes that call for much more butter, but I suppose it's so basic as to be adaptable to a lot of tastes. My grandmother made the recipe from native hard-shelled Texas pecans from her own tree. They are much more flavorful than soft shell and store-bought pecans, but also more work.]

3 [unclear word] beaten eggs [I believe these were medium eggs]

2/3 cup sugar

Dash of salt

1-cup corn syrup

1/3 cup melted butter

1-cup pecan halves

Combine eggs, sugar, and salt. Add corn syrup and melted butter. Mix well. Stir in pecan halves and pour mixture into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes. Note: Do not overbake these. Keep a watch the last 10 minutes, as pie will continue to cook a bit upon removal from oven.

[She would have baked these in a wheat crust and I hope I find the recipe for that one day. Still any basic pie crust should do.]

H.R. Morse Sr. left numerous sermons, tracts, and newspaper columns. His style may seem at times a little strange to modern readers. Unused to modern sound bytes, he was a true Southerner who took his time to get a point across. His labor at times will seem a little too painstaking to modern Charismatic Christians, but may also seem a bit out of the norm to the ears of some traditional Protestants. All articles are reprinted as time and acquisition permit.

At first I hesitated to add anything of myself to the mix of my grandfather’s pages. It is, after all, mostly his story and not mine. It seems unfitting, though, to ignore related items and points of view that round him out into a whole human being as well as a minister of God. First of all, I want to say that to me my grandfather was just my grandfather — not a minister. To those who see him first as a minister, they will tend to take that dimension as the whole of him.

As a grandfather, he was a very loving man. Like all families, we had our eruptions and disagreements, but he was always there for us. He was the kindest male relative I remember having, always ready to give hugs and sing us songs and discipline us when needed. He could whistle better than anyone I knew. Oh, yeah…and he loved baseball and never missed Paul Harvey on the radio.

I also remember him as very much the patriarch of the family, ready to say the prayer over every significant event and holding “office” at his place at dinner. No one else took their hot tea like he did. I recall him stirring his tea very slowly while pouring a ton of sugar into it and adding evaporated milk until the tea flowed over the edge into the saucer. He did this the same way every time so that it appeared as a tribal elder’s ritual. I tried emulating him for a spell and decided my own way was much easier — less to clean up. It turned out he was really just a sloppy tea drinker.

And what can be said for my grandmother except that no man ever had a wife so supportive. It has been said that a woman will either make a fool out of a man or a man out of a fool. She gave him a backbone and he gave her love songs. My mother loved to tell the story of my grandfather serenading my grandmother in the rocking chair. She would have two children on her knees and two riding the rockers, and the entire family would rock together while he sang. People still have the kindest things to say about my grandparents.

I must add something of myself here and this is where it gets a little sticky. I knew that my grandparents lived though a significant historical time in the life of the church. There is no question that many, many lives were changed and that much was accomplished through it all. Because my grandfather was connected with Grace Gospel Church, many people who have ties, old or recent, to that group find this site.

Many people who became a part of the Grace Gospel communities since the 60′s think they are “in the know” about the history of that chuch but they are usually mistaken. I find them to be like people who get hooked on a soap opera that has been running for 15 years previously and are unaware of anything that went before. They seem not to realize that what it became is not necessarily what it was, though the history is handed down as if all the transitions were seamless. Many know that church by a reputation, a rumor, a personality they encounter. It was many things to many people. Consequently, the reactions are varied, depending on when people enter the narrative.

For me, Grace Gospel is hard to define on a personal level. I knew some of its people as just family friends who had been around as long as the Ancient of Days. We saw some of these people at our home, in stores and various places around town even when we weren’t attending regularly. My grandparents were usually pastoring a couple of places out of town at any given time while we occupied their house, and my mother continued to see Grace Gospel as her church even though the dysfunctionality of her relationship with my father precluded our going much of the time.

To me, there was no other legitimate church except Grace Gospel because my mother convinced me it was so. I had only to witness the cold or non-existent Christian witness of other church goers to believe it might be so. Her feelings made it impossible for her to find another church home for many years after we moved because no other place measured up. She never got past that until she was in her late 50′s.

My recently deceased uncle told me once that there were “two” Grace Gospels. There was the women’s group and the men’s group, and he said the attitudes were quite different. For my part, I caught the whiff of legalism and it didn’t bode too well with me. This was apparently a symptom with the women more so than with the men. I can’t remember enough to compare the two groups, but I was mostly influenced by the women who took great care to see to it that little girls were looked after by women — not men. For that reason I don’t have a very good handle on how accurate were my perceptions. Perhaps my brothers moved more easily between the two groups.

I knew many lovely and welcoming people in Grace Gospel, but I was always on the fringes, owing to my parents’ on-again, off-again involvement. When I was an older adolescent I encountered other church groups that had sprung from Grace Gospel and some good came of it. Let’s say it was a start. I also wound up having to unlearn a lot of things later. I ended up taking a different spiritual path than my mother in some ways, but, as Bob Dylan said it best in a song, “We always did feel the same. We just saw it from a different point of view.” I suppose now that I view the “flavor” of Grace Gospel as a dimension of the faith, much needed, but grown out of all proportion to other legitimate emphases of the faith.

I felt later that some of the emphasis contributed to my (and my mother’s) co-dependence in relationships with others. It exacerbated the tendency to “magical thinking” so prevalent in children of alcoholics. I firmly believe that some of the attitudes instilled in me contributed to my being abused in relationships. There are several other things I don’t miss: 1) the heavy emphasis on dispensational teaching, 2) refusal to be allowed medical help in expectation that everything must have a miracle ending, 3) constant fears instilled regarding apocalyptic end-times. I also don’t miss having the “hell” scared out of me, being afraid I might be “left behind”, or being care taken by people so caught up in religious frenzy that they have no time to listen to their children’s needs.

I believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit but not as a bypass to producing the fruit of the spirit, which must be walked out in real time. I believe in greater emphasis of the Cross as a daily reality rather than a doctrine about “reckoning oneself dead”. Probably most Grace Gospelites would be shocked to think I might suppose that they don’t know about these things. They had teachers and preachers who talked and talked and talked about these concepts, but to me a concept is not the same as the reality. Had I been bought up in a different tradition, I might have had some other issues instead. Most people I know do.

The consequence to my giving a rounded picture of Grace Gospel is that so many are offended if things aren’t one hundred percent positive. Some worship the cult of Grace Gospel or a cult of personality in the late Robert Ewing. There might be any number of reasons people feel stung by some of my comments. I suppose I somewhat understand the reaction. It’s like when someone close to you dies and you are grieving, but meanwhile someone who experienced a different side of the person still has wounds. They are anxious to emote and find resolution and you are anxious to defend. You might both be right.

Likely as not, I often get the impression that I have “touched an idol”, and I dearly hope people will consider that and deal with it. When I first posted “The Glory” series on another website, I received numerous and interesting comments — some actually positive. I was even glad to bring a couple of people together. I think the silliest comment I ever received was from a defensive reader who told me I was just jealous of Robert Ewing because God didn’t give me his ministry.

I disabled that series on my other website at saltsister.com because of the numerous comments on those posts which kept popping up months and years after I had moved on to discuss other things. I never intended that entire website to be about Grace Gospel, but apparently people researching the topic of “Grace Gospel” didn’t realize that the series was part of something larger. It seemed more appropriate to re-route the series here since Grace Gospel was more integral to my grandfather than to me. It can be an ongoing topic here without shifting the entire purpose of this site.

I hope that those who appreciate Grace Gospel and those who knew my grandfather will see this site as historical, informational and biographical. Of course it has a bias; it is told from the point of view of one directly connected with and affected by events. We do not live our lives objectively, though with some effort, we may get past some of our own motes and beams. His story is not my story but the two intersect in places. As I uncover his writings, I’ve been amazed at how much I agree with him as an adult. I wonder if my style of living out the faith would surprise, amuse or alarm him. But I kind of think he already knows…

[These appear to be notes from a sermon by H.R. Morse.]

We can only know the truth of the scriptures by revelation.

Much has been said and much has been made of revelation. Perhaps you have been somewhat perplexed and confused by the claim of so many having received some “Special” revelation of what God’s puposes are for this end time.

Without contoversy, it is conceded that always the Lord continues to reveal to His people, as they are able to receive, what His secrets are, and what His purposes are in regard to the end time. Inasmuch as we are in the last hour of this dispensation, we can rest assured that those who are openhearted will know by the Spirit what the Lord wants to accomplish to consumate [sic] what this dispensation was designed for, namely, “To perfect the Church, His Body, Eph. 4:11-16.

The Epistle to the Ephesians is Paul’s revelation of the Body of Christ, which is especially in the foregound of the operation of the Spirit at this time. PERFECTION is the watchword of Paul’s revelation. God’s goal is PERFECTION. Eph. 1:10-11. “That in the dispensation of the fulness of times, He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth; even in HIM; In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being pre-destinated according to the PURPOSE of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” Individuals, as such, are never pre-destinated, but believers and overcomers are pre-destinated in the purpose of God, to be partakers with HIM. Identified with HIM (Jesus).

After we have received the revelation thru the Spirit, it is paramount that we wait for the visitation to make the revelation an actual experience, and not merely a doctrine or teaching. All experiences are, of course, a doctrine or teaching of truth, then made plain by perception and subsequently by experience. At the beginning of this great outpouring and visitation, there was given a revelation of what God had promised in the harvest time or latter days, which had been prophesied by the prophet Joel. Peter gave us the first glimpse of its meaning in his day, but to be a greater fulfillment in the latter days. Restoration was to be made at the close of the 6th dispensation for the coming of the Lord in person. Here are some strong words by the Son of God: Luke 19, 42-44b saying, “If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! BUT NOW THEY ARE HIDDEN FROM THINE EYES……BECAUSE THOU KNEWEST NOT THE TIME OF THY VISITATION.”

Unity of spirit, unity of purpose, and not necessaily unity of doctrine. This was being accomplished at the first of this present revival. The enemy has used many cunning devices to segrega[t]e God’s people, even those who have embraced the revival and outpouring in the recent years; causing many to be frustrated and confused by those who were declaring the revelation they have is paramount, and have intimidated many thru philosophies that have been resurrected from the past; declaring that these philosophies are an integral part of THIS ENDTIME REVIVAL. This endtime revival is termed in the scriptures of truth as “Restoring the years that the locust hath eaten”……..Something that has been lost to the church, and needs to be retrieved and restored. This is the principle upon which the Holy Ghost is operating at this time.

May we have unity on the ESSENTIALS and liberty on the NON-ESSENTIALS in the body of Christ. May our fellowship be with the Father and the Son. I John 1:13 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye may also have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ……”

The revival is activating the gifts and the ministeries [sic]of the Spirit which had fallen into decay and needed revitalizing and invigorating by the five ministries, and the ministry of fasting and prayer, and the laying on of hands is brought into operation in faith. A fresh anointing has been given, because of great need in this end time. Isa. 31:17-18 “When the poor and needy seek water and there is none and their tongue faileth for thirst, I, the Lord, will hear them, I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them, I will open rivers in the high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and dry land springs of water.

Let us not settle for anything but The Best the Lord has promised in the scriptures for these days of consumation that we may not only have the revelation, but the VISITATION as well. That we may not be ashamed at His appearing. For His coming is truly at the DOOR. The harvest time is upon us, and He has promised that the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. Joel 2:23-28-29.

[Discovered among my mother's (Betty) things. She passed March 18, 2008. This was transcribed from a typewritten carbon copy of a letter from H.R. Morse to his sister Ann. She was baptized at age 92 after his death.]

Waco, Texas.

May 10, 1981.

My Dear Sis:

It may seem strange to you that I should write rather than talk with you, but in the time that I have talked I have apparently bungled the job and left you with the feeling that I wished to show my own superiority as compared with you, which is far from my real intentions.

Perhaps I will be more able to convey a more perfect understanding of things intended by writing than I was able to do while speaking.

[Any] thought you may have that I wanted to condemn you, or show myself off to any advantage over you, is far from the truth, nevertheless, my dear sister, I have this to say to you.

No matter how sincere we may be, or how honest our heart may be, or how deeply we may feel the hurt of our fallen man’s suffering and sympathize with him, if we are following a cour[se] that is fundamentally unsound, these attributes of self righteousness will not atone for the basic error of our way.

There is a natural law that keeps the whole human race out of the Kingdom of Heaven and God alone has power to set that law aside.

When Adam was created, he was created perfect and walked and talked with God face to face.

He had no need of wisdom because he had access to the direction of God’s wisdom, and because God directed him Adam was able to name all the animals of the earth, yet today in spite of our so-called intelligence, wisdom, training, education of what ever we may be pleased to call this thing that gives us such a feeling of superiority over the civilizations of the past, there is not one living soul who can name all of the animals of the earth today.

Some may say, Well, so what! What does this prove?

This proves that Adam, not content with God’s wisdom, sought after his own wisdom, because it was his desire to have knowledge of good and evil, that caused him to deliberately turn away from God and become disobedient.

God had told him in specific manner, “In the day that thou shalt eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil thou shalt surely die.”

This “eating” is figurative, it could just as well have been partake or acquire or accept as eat.

Adam sinned and died to God.

Some will say, but Adam did not die, rather he lived to an age of more than 900 years.

Adam’s soul died.

What is the soul? The word translated soul in the English version for the bible is the Hebrew word “”Nephesh” in the old testament and the Greek word “Pseuch” in the new testament.

In the original language they refer to the mind, and in our relation with God they speak of our mental consciousness of the presence of God.

This is what died in Adam. He was no longer able to be conscious of the presence of God to direct him, so had to fall back upon his own faulty wisdom.

Adam was the source of the human race and died to God before his first child came into the world.

Now the fundamental law [I] spoke of is this, “all things shall bring forth fruit after its own kind.”

Adam, because of his disobedience was dead to God having a dead soul.

God could no longer have fellowship with him, therefore the whole human race was cut off from God at it’s [sic] very inception, because Adam having a dead soul and a dead conscience toward God, could not bring a child into the world with a conscience alive toward God.

It is then no longer a question of our being lost if we do not produce some good works that will recommend us to God.

What can we that are dead to God do?

The whole human race has been lost since Adam and we as individuals remain lost except we find a savior.

Herein is the mighty wisdom of God, for while he himself could have no further dealings with men, God having pronounced a judgement curse on man for his disobedience, sent his son Jesus to set as an intermediary between God and man to bring man back into subjection to the will of God.

This is why Jesus could say, “He that hath the son hath the Father also.”

The spirit of Jesus Christ unites with our human spirit and from this union a birth takes place, as Jesus told Nicodemus in the 3d chapter of John’s Gospel, “Except a man be born again he cannot see the Kingdom of Heaven.”

This then is that new creation that Paul speaks of when he says we are new creatures in Christ Jesus.

Being new creatures we are no longer of the race of Adam but are adopted by Christ Jesus into the household of God.

God no longer deals with us as enemies and unbelievers but as sons of God, and if sons then heirs and joint heirs with Jesus Christ for whom the glories of heaven were made but he has so graciously shared with us.

God does not see us as liars and hypocrites. He sees us in Jesus Christ or he just don’t [sic] us. He sees us in Christ when he can see Christ in us.

Sis there was nothing in anything I said to you when present with you, nor is there anything in this that is intended to exalt me over you, neither to hurt your feelings or make you feel in any way degraded, but merely to point out that it is a big mistake to take a stand, “I am just as good as the Jones’es,” since it is entirely possible that the Jones’es might not be so hot themselves.

The word of God says, “There is none good, no not one”, and that means you and me both.

Now I have learned about the mess I was in and have done something about it.

I could be of untold help to you if you would approach the matter with an open heart.

Few of us are willing to do this for the simple reason that in doing so the first step is to admit in our own heart that we just might be wrong about something and not many of us like the thought.

If everyone would approach the subject of religion on the basis of inquiring into the scriptures in order to establish them in our hearts, rather than to establish our own pet understanding, there would be no room for arguments or divergence of opinions because if the Holy Ghost interprets the word to you and to me he will tell us both the same thing.

Now Ann you say you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and that you are saved.

According to the word of God I have no right to doubt your word or to pass judgement upon you, but also by this same word of God, I say unto you, “By their fruit ye shall know them”.

1st John 3:14 “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.”

This has no refference [sic] to the members of [one's] own family in the flesh, but rather to the children of God.

Sis, do you love the children of God? Do you love the service [sic] of God?

You who love your fellow man and are willing to be thought ill of because of kin in the natural, are you willing to work and be disapproved of for Jesus?

You can’t work for Jesus by drawing back in your own shell and separating yourself from God’s people, neither can it be done by classifying them as hypocrites and offering [...].

There are hypocrites in the churches without doubt but there are ten fold more out of the church.

Without doubt it would be bad enough to live this life with such and may God deliver us from having to spend eternity with them.

Sis read your bible and study it close, ask God to reveal his truth to you.

He has promised that if we are sincere he will reveal himself, we need not that some man teach us sines [sic] it is our privilege to be all taught of God.

Luke 11:9-10 “And I say unto you, ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened.”

God’s only requirement is that we seek with an honest heart desireing [sic] the truth and God is not a man that he can lie.

Well my time is almost up and I am going to have to bring this to a close somewhere.

There were certain things I felt you should have called to your attention and somehow things never worked out so that I could when I was talking to you.

Now I leave the things I have said in the hands of the Lord that he may cause you to meditate on them and acquire a desire to go further into them.

I have a lot of things I would love to help you to understand but before that can be you must have a desire to know the truth.

With lots of love, I am as always,

Your brother.

My Experience With the Lord

by H.R. Morse

[From a paper marked "Official Telegram". I discovered this while clearing out my mother's things and took it to be from H.R. Morse Sr., not Jr., because of his mention of going home with "Mrs. Morse", his wife. H.R. Morse Jr., the son, passed away Oct. 29, 2008. Here, H.R. Morse Sr. seems to be describing his call as a teacher.]

My greatest experience with the Lord happened in the early hours of the morning of July 17th 1946.

We had been attending a series of Bible studies conducted by Bishop R. Anderson Jardine of London England, who was also conducting a revival meeting in the Grace Gospel Church at 1917 McKenzie St [Ave.] in Waco, Texas.

After the services on Thursday and Friday nights July 25th & 26th a number of us remained at the church to pray that the Lord might manifest the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the midst of our church.

We prayed until after 11 PM each night and after prayer was over on Friday night Mrs. Morse and I went to our home and it was probably after midnight before we retired for the night.

I went to sleep almost immediately and do not know what time it was when I awoke but it must have been about 3 oclock in the morning.

I was wide awakeend [sic] it seemd that I ws doomed to spend the balance of the night counting sheep and trying to get some sleep, which just presisted [sic] in eluding me.

How long this continued I am not able to say exactly, but after a short while my thoughts turned to the Lord and I began to pray silently and to praise the Lord.

Suddenly I felt the spirit closing in around me and it felt as though it completely shut the world away from me just as if a heavy curtain had been drawn around me.

The pressure of the Spirit became so heavy that it seemed to be difficult to breathe freely, just as if some mighty invisible force had actually come in contact with my body and was pressing me against the bed on which I lay.

Suddenly the Holy Spirit took possession of my mind and began to word the prayer which I was praying silently.

I lost all conscienceness [sic] of any effort on my part to continue to pray, still the prayer went on, as if I was hearing myself pray aloud, and using words tht I know I would not ordinarily use.

It was a beautiful prayer and far more eloquent than any I would be likely to word of my own effort.

It’s principle [sic] theme ws a pleading with the Almighty God in the name of his beloved son, that God would search my heart to find which of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit I would be able to use for the greatest glory to the Lord Jesus Christ. That the Heavenly Father would liberally bestow of these gifts in order that the Father might delight in the perfecting of his servant for the service of the Lord.

The prayer ended but the closeness of the Spirit continued for a short time and of a sudden I heard a voice in tongues. When the tongues ceased I felt the annointing [sic] of the spirit in a tingling sensation which pervaded my whole body from head to foot and which lasted for a considerable length of time.

After which a voice spoke to me and said, “Now you know all things according to the knowledge of God”.

For a few minutes I lay there awake praising and thanking God and the annointing [sic] of the spirit was repeated again the tingling sensation fom head to foot for a considerable length of time and again a voice said, “Now you know all things according to the wisdom of God”.

Again I thanked the Lod and praised him but the spirit continued on with me and a voice said, “Now you will hear the Angel Chorus and the heavenly music-” but for some unknown reason I failed to hear either.

At this point however another voice broke into things and called me by my name and attempted to tell me something that was never completed.

I was left with the feeling that the voice which called me by name was the voice of the spirit of evil which was trying to prevent me receiving any more of the gifts, but he had been silenced by the Holy Spirit before he could complete what he was trying to say.

Apparently however he succeeded in preventing me fom hearing the Angel Chorus and the Heavenly music, which if true, will yet be fulfilled because whatever the Holy Spirit begins he will surely complete.

This indicates however that old satan was really putting up a battle for me before finally surrendering me to the Lord.

After this I felt myself descending like I was on an elevator that was being lowered for miles which finally did stop and I saw a host of silent people who would come out of a door, take one look in my direction and then pass on out of sight.

Some had patches over their eyes as if they were blind, possibly indicating that they had been blind to the way of light.

Everyone had dark brown skin which looked more like a dried piece of leather, indicating that the water of life had dried up within them.

Afterward I seemed to be in conversation with Brother Ewing and he was telling me that he had received the gifts of knowledge and wisdom.

He also told me there was another person present with him and that the Lord had revealed to him that the message he had received was also intended for this other person, but Brother Ewing did not seem to know who the other person was.

I took this to be the Lord’s way of revealing to me that Brother Ewing and I had both received the same gifts.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image and after our likeness: and let them have dominion over — .” Genesis 1:26. In this prerace covenant God sets forth His divine purpose in creating man. When Adam and Eve, with their own election or privilege of choice sinned, they fell from their sinless estate. Satan’s sinful nature was imparted to their race thru physical generation. Then God the Father offered up God the Son, by faith, in a coming Calvary, to provide fallen man with a redemption, that would RESTORE CHRIST TO THE SOUL LIFE. At the appointed time Jesus Christ the Lamb of God was offered up, that His pure Life Blood might pay the redemption price for all who would receive Him as their Substitute. He also gave His Life and His divine nature, thru regeneration to the believer, and the born again one, found himself with TWO NATURES. Man thus became God’s only creation with two natures. By the acts of our human will, we choose good or evil, and our character and personality is formed and our destiny decided.

Man-made delicately balanced and intricate computing machines are as nothing to the intricate and perfectly balanced mental machine of man. This marvelous soul-system or mind of man is set in millions of tiny brain cells of the head, closely timed and balanced with another intricate system of nerves that move the muscles of our body. Our mind has three primal faculties, namely the INTELLECT, the human WILL, and the Heart or center of our being. What the human will deems important is stored in our storehouse or seedbed, the heart. “Out of the heart are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23. Our human will is the directive part of our mind. God strives with Satan each day, thru each of these conflicting natures, and often thru the law of suggestion, to influence the acts of our human will. What our mind allows to enter our mental organs and remain there, is either of God or Satan, and what feeds one natures starves the other, and habits good or evil are formed.

Triune man lives on three planes of life, namely, that of the spiritual, mental or physical. Each of these three phases of our life, have [sic] FIVE ROOTS each, which are set in our triune life as outposts of defense against evil. Let us look at these five roots or faculties of senses. In our physical or natural life we all have the senses or faculties of SIGHT, HEARING, TASTING, SMELLING, and FEELING. And in our spiritual life we have the five senses of FAITH, HOPE, CHARITY, FEAR or respect of God, and true WORSHIP. Let us examine more closely the FIVE SOUL SENSES or FACULTIES, since thru them our body acts and our character is formed, often changing from time to time. At the moment of our salvation or new birth, God restores CHRIST TO OUR SOUL CONSCIOUSNESS and mirrors His Life nature fully in our minds and our delicate soul system is perfectly balanced and in harmony with God again.

Often evil spirits oppress and possess the mind of weak-willed people, whose intellects have been given over to carnal worldly habits, as the thief, drunkard, gambler, etc. But our SOULS and soul-consciousness is [sic] eternal and must spend eternity somewhere. In hell the Rich Man of Luke 16:19-31, still retained all of these five senses and faculties. The first SIN entered into Lucifer’s MIND, in highest heaven. Isaiah 14:14 and the Church was conceived in the sufferings of Christ SOUL in lowest hell. Psalm 139:15-16. Small children’s immature soul life is often blighted and diseased by the proud parents spoiling them, thru over indulgence, or by careless undisciplined words and actions in the home. The television has filled our small children’s minds with worldliness, and puts guns on the kids that ride the sidewalks on tricycles. Christian homes need to restore the old family altar, and teach obedience to God’s Word and practice self-denial. A deep consecration saves the soul from mental distempers or worry, fear, etc.

An illustration of a stronger will controlling a weaker or yielded human will, is seen in the cases of hypnotism. This often happens within our own mental faculties when we having carelessly loaned one or more of these five mental faculties to Satan in worldly pleasures, etc. find a warfare within our own mind members or faculties. This brings our minds into a state of indecision, or uncertainty that ends in confusion and frustration. Often we do not find the deep seated cause or know what is the matter. The Bible contrasts good and evil, in life experiences. In the 7th and 8th chapters of The Romans, the Apostle Paul contrasts the believer with warfare in his senses or members of his mind, and the Spirit-filled believer at rest. The worldly weak willed believer in the 7th chapter having lost the power of his will to resist the Satan controlled sense or faculty or member of his soul-life, is terribly frustrated and defeated. Let us examine more closely these FIVE SENSES, FACULTIES or MEMBERS of our mind. They are IMAGINATION, AFFECTION, CONSCIENCE, REASON and MEMORY.

What does the Bible say concerning each of the above faculties that minister life or death to you and others, and are the roots of your trouble? The word IMAGINATION is in scripture 19 times, and has a MINISTRY of inspiration to your love, faith and obedience towards God. It helps you to imagine God is answering your prayer and need. But Satan gains control and makes it evil in imaginations of fear, doubts, etc. In 2nd Corinthians 10:5 we read “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against he knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” The next of the five sense is that of AFFECTION, thru which Christ MINISTERS His love. There are nine scriptures concerning it. When Satan controlled, it turns to a passion to defeat you. The Apostle Paul gives his advice in colossians 3:2, “Set your affections on things above and not on things sof the earth.” Pure affection is seen in the unspoiled life of any small child.

The next member of faculty of our soul consciousness is CONSCIENCE which MINISTRY is to warn and cry against sin, and convict our heart of evil that is allowed to enter. It is in the scripture 23 times. We read in Hebrews 9:14 “…purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” The next of our five faculties of the mind, is REASON. It has a MINISTRY of selecting important things for our life and establishing our intellects with proven things. In the training of our intellects with the wisdom and knowledge of men which is essential, we should guard against our sense of reason being allowed to be based on the testimony of our five human senses rather than on the promises of the Almighty God. Human reasoning neutralizes spiritual faith and causes the truth to become but a dead letter. In Isaiah 1:18 we read, “Come let us reason together, saith the Lord. Tho your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as snow; tho they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

The last of these five senses or members of our mind, is MEMORY. It has a wonderful MINISTRY of retaining knowledge the intellect has gained. It is set 25 times in scripture. If one will examine each of the scriptures concerning each of these five members or faculties, you will gain a perfect knowledge and instruction as to their proper exercises for the Christian mind. Memory restores to our mind the wonderful promises of God, and also reminds us of God’s faithfulness and the surety of His immutable Word. The Apostle Paul gives us special teachings on the subject of the ministry of these our five soul or mental members, the builders of our character, in a number of scriptures using the word “members” instead of the word “senses” or “faculties.” Let us examine some of these. In Romans 6:13 we read, “Neither yield ye your members (senses) as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those alive from the dead; and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.”

Paul continued in Romans 6:19 “…for as you have yielded your members (faculties) servants to unrighteousness and unto holiness.” Then in Romans 7:5 he continues, “For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sin, which by the (Mosaic) Law, did work in our members (senses) to bring forth fruit unto death.” Then again in Romans 7:23 Paul continued, “But I see another law in my members (mental faculties) bringing me into captivity to the law of sin WHICH IS IN MY MEMBERS (senses). In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians he likens the church body and its members to that of the human body and its members. In 1st Corinthians he likens the church body and its members to that of the human body and its members. In 1st Corinthian [sic] 12:12-27 Paul mentions these “members” 14 times. This body of scripture is primarily concerned with the church body but it is equally applicable to our human body and its mental members. Again in Colossians 3:5 Paul said, “Mortify (bring into the death state) therefore your members, which are upon the earthly things,” then named six terrible sins, that brings God’s corrective wrath to purify our minds.

When we discover our five senses have brought sin into our mind, we should confess the sins to our Lord jesus, and in repentance and godly sorrow turn away and discipline our mind with washing it with the Word of God. Unjudged sins caused by soul hazards overlooked, and allowed to remain, are our adversaries of righteousness, and God promises in Hebrews 10:27 to destroy them out of our minds and life thru fiery testings and trials. The apostle wrote again in Hebrews 5:14 “But strong meat (deep truths) belongeth to them that are matured, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Lastly we read in James 5:1 the reason of the carnal Christian’s divisions and warfare. “From whence come your lusts that WAR IN YOUR MEMBERS?” How can we locate a rebellious sense, faculty or member of our mind or soul system? One or more that Satan has captured and turned against us? By our thoughts and the acts of our human will.

We should seek afresh each day, the righteousness of Christ, until using these our five senses, He is “Made unto us WISDOM, RIGHTEOUSNESS, SANCTIFICATION and REDEMPTION.” 1Corinthians 1:30. Then will our five mental sense be rooted in His ministry graces of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self control. Galatians 5:22. Then we have the spiritual boundaries of the seven hundred commands of the New Testament. The last sums up the others, in Jude verse 23. “Keep yourselve in the love of God.” All of the Bible heroes of faith, with disciplined minds and controlled faculties, all CONFESSED TRUTH under all circumstances. Paul confessed, “I can do all things in Him that strengtheneth me.” Phillip. 4:13. The Prophet Isaiah in Isa. 53:5 confessed, “The chastisement for my peace in on Him (Messiah).” The Apostle Matthew in Matt. 8:17 when threatened with sickness, confessed, “Himself took our infirmity and bare our sickness.” The Psalmist David also knew this way of victory for trained intellect and disciplined sense, in Psalm 23:3, gives us the remedy, for restoring and mirroring again the Christ Image in our minds, “HE RESTORETH MY SOUL.”

I will add links and information here as it becomes available. H.R. Morse became associated with Grace Gospel Church while it was still in its infancy (which was the best time to be there). The church held a convention once a year and Morse used to preach the opening sermon.

This link takes you to some of its history: Grace Gospel It is my personal opinion that this site captures some of the worst features that developed in Grace Gospel Church after the early days. I believe that what was once a supernatural move of God veered completely off its original course as certain men began to be promoted (to their detriment).

Here is a site I ran across on the Latter Rain movement. Under the section “More Latter Rain Influence” appears this statement: “The contact was with Robert Ewing from Waco, Texas who had a church that had come from the Latter Rain Revival in Canada.” This is incorrect and was probably just a misunderstanding on the author’s part. Rosalie Woodliff Morse was the first to experience the outpouring in Waco and she never heard of Latter Rain until later. The article is an interesting synopsis of the Restorationist movement.

Here is a link to a Wikipedia article on the Latter Rain Movement. Key word is “Ewing”. H.R. Morse served with Glenn Ewing whose personal ministry cannot be indiscriminately lumped together with his son Robert’s. Glenn Ewing was known as a self-effacing individual whose compassion for people was known far and wide. He did not accept the adulation heaped on him by admirers. Nor did he accept all of the teachings of his son, who followed in his footsteps. In fact, the elder Ewing considered that Morse’s teaching ministry was the best thing that came out of Grace Gospel. However, Morse was banned from preaching at the yearly convention by the younger Ewing because he would not accept certain doctrines, notably that of the split Rapture. Until then, Grace Gospel Church had been known as a place where convictions could be preached freely and differences were often overlooked. Robert Ewing spearheaded a movement to begin a Divine Order denomination, which his father, H.R. Morse and others of the church “fathers” opposed.

The church fell into a number of difficulties and funds began to dry up. For years, millions of dollars in unsolicited donations had been funneled through the church and were sent all over the world. Some of the difficulties in what became of the church may be traced directly to disagreements within the Ewing family. Nevertheless, in my editorial opinion, I suspect that this is as it was meant to be so that God’s people never have a certain dwelling place on this earth.

More information may be found in a personal narrative at the following links from a series. (It will probably touch someone’s idol, but that’s the price you pay for reading a “personal narrative.”)

After living through the aftermath of the Waco tornado of 1953, he always had it in the back of his mind to devise a way to minimize tornado damage. In 1995, he patented a tornado protection system, which has yet to be developed. Here is the abstract:

A pressure stabilizing system for equalizing the pressure within an enclosure and the atmosphere during rapidly developing low pressure atmospheric conditions comprising a duct with a blow out valve or a valve positively operated by an electrical or gas operated system and a pressure detector to activate the electrical or gas operated valve.

Morse Sr. was working on the 7th floor of the Medical Arts Building downtown when the Waco tornado hit. Oddly, the windows on that floor were not blown out as they were in the rest of the building.
